QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

What is URL encoding?

A URL can only contain a limited set of characters. Everything else, such as spaces, Cyrillic letters or &, is written as % followed by hexadecimal bytes. A space becomes %20, and é becomes %C3%A9.

Component or full URL: which should I use?

Encode a component when you insert a single value into a URL, such as a search query or a redirect address inside a query parameter: this also encodes / ? & and =. Encode the full URL when you have a whole address with spaces or non-Latin characters and want to keep its structure intact.

Why do I see + instead of %20?

HTML forms encode spaces as + in query strings, and in query parameters both mean a space. Tick "Treat + as space" when you decode form data.
