QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Which rules does this tool follow?

The official transliteration approved by Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 55 of January 27, 2010. It is used for passports, driver's licenses and road signs.

Why is Є sometimes "Ye" and sometimes "ie"?

It depends on where the letter sits in the word. At the start of a word, Є, Ї, Й, Ю and Я become Ye, Yi, Y, Yu and Ya. Anywhere else they become ie, i, i, iu and ia. So Юлія becomes Yuliia.

What happens to the soft sign and the apostrophe?

Both are dropped, as the rules require. The letter pair зг is written as zgh (Згорани becomes Zghorany) so it is not confused with the letter ж (zh).
